Biologically Active Peptides

Biologically active peptides are typically from 5 to approximately 70 amino acid residues in length. In many cases, the peptide chain is stabilized with covalent crosslinks (for example, disulfide bonds) to maintain their desired biological activities.

These activities may include analgesic, antidiabetic, antihormonal, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, antithrombotic, and laxative effects. With low toxicity and high specificity, these peptides are routinely used in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, veterinary, and diagnostic industries.

Some common categories of biologically active peptides include:

  • Angiotensins and other cardiovascular peptides
  • Antimicrobial peptides and host defense peptides (including defensins, LL-37)
  • Cell-penetrating peptides (including TAT peptides)
  • Enzyme inhibitors and substrates
  • Glucagon-like peptides (GLP-1, GLP-2) and GLP-1 agonists and antagonists
  • Hepcidins
  • Neuropeptides
  • RGD peptides (which include linear and cyclic)
  • Receptor agonists and antagonists
  • Venom and toxin peptides
